The cover design of this splendid journal is a reproduction of a gold-tooled book binding created in London in 1701. The slanted lines at the top and bottom of the design are referred to as ''cottage roof style,'' a frequent element of English book bindings in the 17th and 18th centuries.

A matte black background sets off tulips and other motifs which are illumined with iridescent red highlights.Patterns of leaves and lacey accents are traced in gold foil.Embossing adds dimensional detailing, while a ''hubbed'' spine treatment recalls tomes of old.
